What is Hypnosis?
For purposes here, the hypnosis that I practice is simply called 'hypnosis' throughout the website. But more specifically, a consulting hypnotist helps ordinary people with ordinary problems using individual hypnotic techniques. We use motivational coaching by means of hypnotism.
Consulting Hypnosis is a guided form of communication with self.
Under the direction and council of the hypnotist, hypnosis works on a willing subject by engaging the subconscious processes of their mind using relaxation, imagery, emotions, suggestions and repetition to create powerful, new possibilities and effect lasting changes in their life.
But hypnosis is also something we all experience, every day, without trying:
You experience hypnosis when:
- You mow the lawn;
- On your commute to work;
- While engrossed in a good book or movie;
- During any other second-nature, repetitive behavior or task.
Hypnosis is a state of consciousness that we enter and leave naturally, many times over, throughout our daily activities. It feels like daydreaming, and is quite relaxing.
Physiologically what is happening is your brain wave vibrations shift down from their active, Beta pace to slower, Alpha waves; which brings you in tune with your subconscious processes.
What Happens in Consulting Hypnosis
During consulting hypnosis, the hypnotist is intentionally guiding those 'daydreams'; they are not random as when you are 'lost in thought' doing the dishes or mowing the lawn...
...You are brought into a much more focused state of attention under the direction of a hypnotist:
This focused attention is harnessed and combined with deep relaxation, vivid imagery, strong emotions and the repetition of appropriate suggestions; at which time the subconscious can be persuaded to adopt new beliefs, attitudes and practices.
The biggest thing everyday hypnosis and consulting hypnosis have in common is this:
All Hypnosis Is Self-Hypnosis
The client must ultimately allow the practitioner to guide them into and through the hypnotic process, based on a sincere desire for change.
How Does Hypnosis Work?
Hypnosis harnesses your greatest personal resource; your subconscious mind, to empower you to make the positive, permanent, life-altering changes you want to make for yourself.
After I have guided you into achieving a steady state of relaxation, your conscious mind drifts to the side and lets your subconscious take over, which by its nature is deeply receptive to accepting the suggestions that it receives throughout the session; some are direct suggestions and others are indirect.
Your subconscious mind can be compared in many ways to a four-year old child: Whatever you tell the subconscious, it believes is TRUE. It also can't easily distinguish between past, present, and future - everything is in the PRESENT to the subconscious. Therefore, the suggestions so readily accepted are also integrated as the present truth of your life.
And that is how hypnosis works.
Can I Be Hypnotized?
To answer this question I will paraphrase a leader in the field of hypnosis, who says that the only person who can't be hypnotized is the one not in the room.
While this may be a slight exaggeration, it is true that most people can experience hypnosis. The level of hypnosis reached will vary by individual. Fortunately, a light state of hypnosis is all that is necessary to derive full benefits from a hypnosis session. Many hypnotists, including myself, believe that a lighter state is optimal for communicating with the subconscious.
~~~~ALL ABOARD?~~~~
So, if you believe that most any person of reasonable intelligence and cognitive functioning can be hypnotized, you're right.
But, if you believe that having a steely resolve and steadfast determination to AVOID being hypnotized can 'work' - you're right again.
YOU ARE THE CAPTAIN OF THE S.S. TRANCE!
The ship will not leave port without your say-so!
Any wariness you may have about hypnosis wouldn't be enough to prevent your hypnotic experience from happening (though I will address such things in our first session to make you as comfortable as I can). If you believe you can be hypnotized or even just want to be hypnotized, it will happen.
A sincere desire to create positive change or improvement in your life will make hypnosis one of the most natural and pleasant experiences you can have.
